New York Counties

New York has 62 counties, each with a sheriff's office that runs the county jail. County jails hold pre-trial detainees and people with sentences of one year or less. The five boroughs of New York City use the NYC Department of Correction instead of county sheriffs. The NYS Commission of Correction sets minimum standards for all 60 county correctional facilities.
